Artist Program 2017

We had so much fun last year, we decided to do it again! If you’re a visual artist, we invite you to participate in our second Float Creative project. Float three times for free, with the understanding that after the second float you’ll start an art project and finish it within one month. We think you’ll be amazed at everything your mind creates when you eliminate the distractions of the outside world.

For more information and to sign up, email us: artists@floatboston.com

Questions! You probably have questions.

Is there a deadline for signing up?  We do have a cap on the number of participants, and we’ll stop the program once we reach our cap OR October 15th 2017, whichever comes first. Sign up now!

Are there requirements for the artwork itself? Does it have to be about floating? The only requirement is that it be a minimum size of 8″x8″ (eight inches square). The subject can be whatever you like. (Please keep in mind that if your subject matter is X-rated that we will not be able to use it on social media or publish it in our book.)

What will happen when I sign up? We’ll get in contact with you to explain the program and make an appointment for a portfolio review. If it’s a good fit for everyone, we’ll sign the contract and schedule your floats.

What happens if I sign up, but it turns out I can’t float because of my health? Please do let us know – we’ll tear up the contract. We want this project to be a win-win situation for everyone.

How will the artworks be used? When you sign our contract, you’ll grant us royalty-free rights to photograph the work and use the images in promotional and commercial projects. If everything works out, we plan to publish the works in a book. We will use the images to promote the artists and floating. You will retain ownership of your work. View a copy of our contract.

Can I participate if I’ve never floated before? Of course! We’ll be delighted to welcome you.

Can I participate if I did last year? Preference will be given to new participants, but we can put you on the wait list.

Open house

Join us on Saturday, November 26th, 2016 (aka Small Business Saturday) from 11am to 2:30pm for our second annual open house! We’ll have snacks on hand, gift certificates for sale, and a raffle to win a free float. We’re giving away one free float for every ten people who enter! You’re welcome to wander around and take a look at our four float tanks, including our two classic Escape Pods and two custom-built Summer Sky tanks.

Small Business Saturday is the more relaxed and friendly answer to Black Friday: it encourages holiday shoppers to patronize independently-owned businesses that are small and local (like us!). It takes place on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend.

Whether you’re already a dedicated float fan or just curious, stop by and say hello. See you there!

Float is located at 515 Medford Street in Somerville’s Magoun Square.
Open House: Saturday, November 26th, 2016 from 11am to 2:30pm.

Pay what you can weekend

Save the date! I am beyond excited to tell you that our first ever Pay What You Can weekend will occur on August 27th and 28th, 2016.

How does Pay What You Can work? Come up with something that feels like a solid energetic exchange for you, and trade it with us for a float that will take place during the

weekend.

What would constitute a solid energetic exchange? Well, we don’t know what you can do, so you tell us. Other centers that have run these sorts of events report accepting things like homemade bread or eggs from home-raised chickens. But this doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to the tangible. Surprise us.

One thing we won’t accept this time around is cash. If our regular prices are a hardship for you, please check out our Community Hours.

We will ask you to sign an agreement detailing our planned exchange. You can take a look at that here.

To participate, drop a note to Amanda [at] floatboston.com.

Community hours

We at FLOAT have always wanted to provide opportunity for as many people as possible to float.  We also want to give back to the community by supporting:

  • First responders
  • Nurses, teachers, community and social service workers
  • Military active service, veterans and National Guard
  • Artists
  • Students
  • People with chronic conditions or illnesses (including anxiety and PTSD)
  • and anyone who finds our regular prices to be a hardship

So starting next week we are excited to make Monday morning before noon Community Hours, when all floats are $40 instead of the regular $75.

We do not require any proof of eligibility — we believe you! If you’re doing your part for the community, or if we can help you out, then please be welcome to float in these hours for our special price.

For more information, please see the full Community Hours page.
