90 Seconds of Cold

Why a very short cold plunge after your float may be the highest-return 90 seconds you spend all week — and what the research actually says.

Most people finish a float in the same state: warm, loose, a little unmoored from time. It's a good feeling. It's also, for a lot of people, a slightly foggy one — the kind where you sit in your car for a minute before you trust yourself to drive.

That fog is exactly why we started pointing people toward the cold plunge on their way out.

Not for ten minutes. Not for a heroic Instagram number. Ninety seconds. Sometimes less. The research on short cold exposure is more interesting — and more specific — than the culture around it would suggest, and almost none of the good data requires you to suffer.

Why cold after a float, specifically

A float session is one of the most complete parasympathetic experiences available to a human being. No light, no sound, no gravity, no temperature gradient against the skin. Your nervous system spends sixty minutes with nothing to defend against, and it downshifts accordingly.

Cold water is the exact opposite input. It's an unambiguous, undeniable signal — and it arrives while your nervous system is at its most receptive, not buried under the day's background noise.

That contrast is the point. You've spent an hour teaching your body what "off" feels like. Ninety seconds of cold teaches it that "on" is available on demand, and that you can move between the two deliberately. That's a skill, and it's trainable.

The float shows you the floor. The cold shows you the ceiling. The useful part is learning you control the elevator.

Practically, it also solves the fog. You leave alert instead of hazy. Several of our regulars now schedule their float for a workday lunch break specifically because the plunge lets them go straight back to work sharp rather than needing an hour to reboot.

What the research actually shows

Cold triggers one of the largest non-drug neurochemical shifts ever measured

Researchers immersed subjects in 57°F (14°C) water and measured plasma catecholamines before and after. Norepinephrine — the neurotransmitter most directly tied to alertness, focus, and mood — increased by roughly 530%. Dopamine rose about 250%. Cortisol trended down. Notably, immersion at 68°F produced no meaningful norepinephrine response at all: the temperature threshold matters more than heroics.

The honest caveat: that particular study used a full hour of immersion. Nobody should read "530%" and assume they'll get it from 90 seconds. Shorter exposures produce smaller — but real — responses; a 20-minute immersion at the same temperature produced roughly a 200% increase. What the data supports is a directional claim, not a dosage promise: cold at the right temperature moves norepinephrine substantially, and it starts moving fast.

Five minutes was enough to change measurable brain activity

Thirty-three healthy adults with no prior cold-water experience sat in a 68°F bath, head out, for five minutes. Before and after, researchers took functional MRI scans and mood inventories. Afterward, participants reported feeling more alert, attentive, active, and inspired — and less distressed and nervous. The scans showed changed coupling between the medial prefrontal cortex and the regions governing attention control and emotional regulation. It was the first imaging study to link the subjective "I feel better" to something visible in the brain.

Worth noting what this study wasn't: it wasn't ice water, it wasn't long, and the participants weren't experienced plungers. It was five minutes in water most people would describe as "cool pool." The effect showed up anyway.

Thirty seconds worked as well as ninety

A randomized controlled trial in the Netherlands enrolled 3,018 adults and assigned them to end their normal shower with 30, 60, or 90 seconds of cold water — or to a control group with no cold at all — every day for 30 days. Across all three cold groups, sickness absence from work dropped 29% compared to control. No serious adverse events. And critically: the 60- and 90-second groups showed no advantage over 30 seconds.

This is the single most useful finding for anyone intimidated by the plunge. The largest and best-designed trial on the subject found that the first half-minute does the work. There is no evidence you need to outlast anybody.

The stress benefit shows up later than you'd expect

A 2025 systematic review pooled 11 randomized trials covering 3,177 participants. The findings were time-dependent: inflammation actually rose immediately and one hour after immersion, but stress was significantly reduced at the 12-hour mark. Sleep quality and quality-of-life measures showed improvement. Immune function and mood showed no consistent short-term effect in the pooled analysis.

That 12-hour delay is a genuinely useful thing to know. If you plunge after an evening float and feel wired rather than calm, you haven't done it wrong. The stress-lowering effect appears to arrive overnight — which lines up with why so many people report their best sleep on plunge days.

What we're not going to claim

We'd rather you trust us than be impressed by us, so: the evidence base here has real limits. Most of these studies are small. The sleep data comes almost entirely from male participants. Cold plunging has not been shown to burn meaningful fat, cure depression, or replace medical treatment for anything.

There's also one finding that cuts against the hype: cold immersion immediately after heavy resistance training may blunt muscle-building adaptations. If your goal that day was hypertrophy, put several hours between the lifting and the cold — or skip it.

What the research does support is narrower and, we'd argue, more interesting: a fast, large, reliable shift in alertness and mood state, a measurable change in brain network activity, a reduction in perceived stress on a delay, and a training effect on your ability to stay calm inside an intense physical signal. That's plenty.

How to do it here

Our plunge can go as low as 37°F. We keep it at 53°F, and that's a deliberate choice — it's the right temperature for about 99% of the people who walk through our door.

Here's why that number isn't a compromise. In the study that produced the 530% norepinephrine figure, 57°F water triggered the response and 68°F water triggered essentially nothing. There's a threshold, and it sits somewhere in between. At 53°F we're comfortably past it — cold enough that the physiology fully engages, warm enough that a first-timer can breathe through 90 seconds instead of panicking through 20. Dropping to 37°F wouldn't buy you a bigger response; it would just buy you a shorter, worse one.

It will feel serious for the first fifteen seconds. Then it stops escalating. That's the part nobody tells you — the sensation plateaus much faster than your anticipation of it does.

  1. Float first. Always. Sixty minutes in the tank, then your normal post-float shower. Rinse the salt fully — you're going into shared water.
  2. Get in deliberately. Don't ease. Sit down to chest level in one motion. Easing in extends the worst part without changing the result.
  3. Control the exhale. Your body will want to gasp. Long, slow exhales through the nose — a four-count in, six or eight out. This is the entire skill, and it's the part that transfers to the rest of your life.
  4. Ninety seconds. Stop there. Aim for 60–90 on your first visit. If you can hold a conversation at 90 seconds, you can go to three minutes next time. There is no prize past that.
  5. Get out and warm up naturally. Towel off, get dressed, move around. Skip the hot shower for ten minutes if you can — letting your body rewarm on its own is part of the stimulus.

One scheduling note

Cold after a float gives you clarity and clean re-entry into your day. Cold before a float does something different — it heightens the contrast, and people often report dropping deeper into the tank afterward.

So: if you're floating in the morning or over lunch, plunge after. If you're floating in the evening and you want the deepest possible session and the best possible sleep, ask us about going cold first. Tell the front desk which one you're after and we'll sequence it for you.

Who should skip it

Cold immersion is a real cardiovascular stressor, not a spa amenity. Talk to your doctor first — and please tell us at check-in — if you have any history of heart disease, arrhythmia, uncontrolled high blood pressure, Raynaud's, cold urticaria, or if you're pregnant. The cold shock response causes an immediate involuntary gasp and a spike in heart rate and blood pressure, which is precisely the reason it's effective and precisely the reason it isn't for everyone.

Never plunge alone, never plunge after drinking, and if anything feels wrong, get out. Our staff stays within earshot for every plunge. That's not a formality.
